Dr. Holzman, I just want to thank you and your staff for taking great care of me when I recently had LASIK surgery at your TLC office. As a pro soccer player, my vision is extremely important and directly affects my performance on the field. Just like anyone else, I had questions about LASIK surgery and made sure I did my research before choosing to go forward with it. "In the LASIK procedure, a flap is created and the cornea is reshaped. 'It's almost like opening a book and removing the pages then closing the book' says Holzman.""'We can pretreat patients with a prescription eye drop that helps increase production of tears' says Holzman. 'There are also over-the-counter drops or artificial tears which are useful for the first few months following these procedures. Pretreatment of the condition before surgery is key to having a successful procedure.'"
"'Before custom technology, we'd remove the tissue from the cornea based on one's spectacle prescription' says Holzman. 'Now it's no longer one-size-fits-all. With custom technology, some extremely precise, individualized vision correction outcomes can be achieved.'"
"The first part of the actual operation is creating the flap. Today, more surgeons use an ultra-fast IntraLase rather than a hand-held microkeratome blade to create corneal flaps. Choosing your LASIK or PRK doc
Dr. Holzman suggests you ask the following:
- Do they have the most up-to-date technology?
- Do they have a lot of experience in using this technology?
- How many procedures do they perform yearly?
- How often does the doctor determine a patient to be a non-candidate for this procedure? (You want to make sure the doctor doesn't operate on everyone.)
- Make sure you meet the surgeon and feel comfortable with him or her and the staff.
- Make sure you are educated about the procedure and know what to expect.
