The Benefits of Combining Intralase and Custom LASIK Technology By Andrew Holzman on July 14, 2011

Intralase® Virginia

Virginia Intralase® Custom LASIK

There are two components of LASIK surgery; the first component involves the creation of the corneal flap. In the early days of LASIK, the three-sided corneal flap was made with a blade microkeratome. Since then, technology has progressed, and surgeons can now use a femtosecond laser to create the flap. Femtosecond lasers such as the Intralase® laser generate precise cuts that reduce the potential for flap complications and produce improved outcomes in patients.

The second component of LASIK surgery involves the reshaping of corneal tissue. Once the corneal flap has been created and opened, underlying corneal tissue can be reshaped with an excimer laser to produce clear vision in patients. During traditional LASIK surgery, the lower order aberrations myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism can be corrected. With custom wavefront LASIK surgery, lower order aberrations are corrected, in addition to the higher order aberrations that cause halos, starbursts, blurring, double vision, and poor night vision. Custom LASIK technology such as the CustomVue™ and ALLEGRETTO WAVE™ wavefront laser systems incorporate use of comprehensive diagnostic tools that measure and map the unique anomalies of your eyes. This information is transferred to the excimer laser system that reshapes the cornea during the second stage of surgery. Custom LASIK systems minimize the potential for human error, offer a more personalized vision correction treatment, and produce better visual outcomes than traditional LASIK surgery.

The combination of the Intralase® laser and custom wavefront LASIK technology provides patients with better quality vision. The use of both systems is now considered to be the safest, most effective form of laser vision correction that is currently available. As the medical director of TLC Laser Eye Centers of Tysons Corner, I encourage my Virginia LASIK patients to consider the benefits of the Intralase® laser and custom wavefront LASIK.
