Why do my eyes start to feel uncomfortable after wearing my contact lenses all day? By Kristina Oneill on July 17, 2013

Why do my eyes start to feel uncomfortable after wearing my contact lenses all day?

Contact lens discomfort occurs for a number of reasons.

  • Eyes stinging, burning, itching (irritation), or other eye pain
  • Comfort is less than when lens was first placed on eye
  • Abnormal feeling of something in the eye (foreign body, scratched area)
  • Excessive watering (tearing) of the eyes
  • Unusual eye secretion
  • Reduced sharpness of vision (poor visual acuity)
  • Blurred vision, rainbows, or halos around objects
  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
  • Dry Eyes
  • Redness of the eyes

Sometimes a minor contact lens irritation, if left untreated, could develop into a more serious problem.  While modern contact lenses are designed to be very comfortable for most wearers, it is not uncommon for others to experience some discomfort.  In fact, about half of all former contact lens users report that they stopped wearing their lenses because they were uncomfortable.  There are definitely situations in which contact lens wearers experience discomfort.  The good news is there are solutions to many contact lens discomfort problems.  LASIK and PRK are a great option to eliminate the need for wearing contacts and glasses.  Artificial tears can help with dryness from wearing lenses all day.  If you have not taken the time to consider refractive surgery as an option to eliminate contact lens discomfort you should!  Think about how brilliant it would be to be free of dealing with contacts everyday!
