What is an IOL or Intraocular lens implant? By Kristina Oneill on January 28, 2014

What is an IOL or Intraocular lens implant?

Today's refractive surgery options for vision correction range from corneal reshaping with lasers to surgical insertion of artificial lenses.  Most patients can be corrected with LASIK or PRK.  However, there are many patients who have a cornea that cannot be reshaped using a laser so an intraocular lens is the best option to correct their vision.  So in the spirit of educating you on what an intraocular lens is and how it works read the information provided below.  If you have any questions or concerns click on the link provided about IOL implant options or call us at one of Dr. Holzman’s TLC  locations to discuss IOL’s further.

An intraocular lens (IOL) is a clear, artificial lens implant used to replace a  natural lens in the eye.  There are many lens options that are customized to your vision prescription to correct refractive errors.

“Like your eye's natural lens, an IOL focuses light that comes into your eye through the cornea and pupil onto the retina, the sensitive tissue at the back of the eye that relays images through the optic nerve to the brain. Most IOLs are made of a flexible, foldable material and are about one-third of the size of a dime. Like the lenses of prescription eyeglasses, your IOL will contain the appropriate prescription to give you the best vision possible.

Before intraocular lenses (IOLs) were developed, people had to wear very thick eyeglasses or special contact lenses to be able to see after cataract surgery. Now, with cataract lens replacement, several types of IOL implants are available to help people enjoy improved vision. Discuss these options with your Eye M.D. to determine the IOL that best suits your vision needs and lifestyle.
