Refractive surgery from Dr. Holzman’s Perspective

A patient recently came into the surgical suite for his LASIK procedure and asked how many patients we had that day.  It was a Friday afternoon and Fridays are usually the preferred day for surgery since many patients have the weekend to relax after their procedure.  We told the patient that we had 18 patients that day.  He asked Dr. Holzman if he ever gets bored doing the same procedure all day long. Dr. Holzman told him that he enjoys meeting different people and hearing their stories.  Every patient is unique.  You can imagine that we get to hear many people’s stories.  Dr. Holzman operates in Charlottesville, Virginia so he often talks about how the patients in Charlottesville are so calm and easy going.  He also operates in Rockville, Maryland and Tyson’s Corner, Virginia.  People are a little more stressed in these two areas...but all have interesting stories.  Laser vision correction is a life changing procedure.  People choose to have the surgery to have a better quality of life and relieve themselves of the hassle of dealing with contact lens wear and glasses.  Dr. Holzman shared his perspective in a blog he wrote back in 2011.  I assist Dr. Holzman in the surgical suite and I can tell you that it is always interesting and never boring!  Read Dr. Holzman’s perspective below:

“Today, we operated on many different people - they were from Ashburn, Alexandria,  Springfield, Annandale, Arlington and Woodbridge, VA.  We had a commercial airline pilot (American Airlines) come to see us from Pennsylvania.  All these different folks had different reasons for wanting the surgery.  There was the 22 year old that had such bad eyes that even "coke bottle" glasses couldn't help her out.  We had the 50 year old that hadn't seen without glasses since she was 5, who had been researching the procedure for years, just waiting and waiting for the right time and right place.  The 48 year old that had great vision all her life, until her 40s....then her reading vision went bad, followed by her distance vision.   The 47 year old pilot that flies 767’s from NY to Barcelona, who was afraid of LASIK for years due to his livelihood, then after doing research and finding the right center and surgeon, finally decided to have it done to correct his astigmatism.  All of them with a common thread, they had a life changing procedure today...and I am lucky to be a part of that with them!  With the amazing staff and our state of the art Custom LASIK and INTRALASE technology, we fixed their eyes today and tomorrow they will all be driving and working without glasses!”
