What If I Move My Eye during LASIK or PRK? By Andrew E Holzman, MD FACS on June 24, 2020

female patient undergoing LASIKPRK and LASIK are highly successful vision correction procedures that can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contacts. Dr. Andrew E. Holzman performs both of these procedures at our Washington, D.C., practice.

One of the most common questions we hear is: “What if I move my eye during LASIK or PRK?” The good news? This is highly unlikely. In fact, even if you do move your eye, it would not cause damage. In this article, we will explain why and offer a few tips for a speedy, successful recovery.

Reasons Why Eye Movement is Not a Concern

Are you worried about moving or blinking your eye during vision correction surgery? Our team, serving patients throughout Maryland and Virginia, is here to put your mind at ease.

#1: Numbing Eye Drops

Before your laser procedure begins, Dr. Holzman administers numbing eye drops. Not only does this prevent pain and discomfort, but it also suppresses the urge to blink. The eyelid is also held open with a small device so the surgeon can access the treatment area. While Dr. Holzman is working, we will keep your eyes lubricated so they do not dry out.

#2: Comfortable Positioning

During a LASIK or PRK procedure, patients are laying down on a bed in a comfortable position. With the use of a special pillow, the head can be properly supported. This places you in an ideal, relaxed position during treatment.

#3: Advanced Eye-Tracking Technology

Once the procedure begins, a light becomes visible. Patients focus on this light while the treatment is being performed. Dr. Holzman closely follows the movement of the eye during the entire procedure. Additionally, a built-in eye tracker moves with every minute shift of the eye. In the highly unlikely event that a patient looks away, coughs, or sneezes, the device automatically shuts off at that precise moment.

For these reasons, there is virtually zero risk of blinking or moving the eye during LASIK or PRK. Even if you do happen to move, safety measures are in place to maximize safety and prevent complications.

Recovery after LASIK or PRK

Keep in mind that the real secret to successful treatment is following the recommended post-treatment guidelines set forth by Dr. Holzman and his team. Here are a few basics to keep you on track:

  • Attend all follow-up appointments so we can assess your progress.
  • Rest your eyes as much as possible for the first 48 hours and reduce screen use during that time.
  • Use your prescribed eye drops to keep the eyes lubricated and comfortable.
  • Avoid strenuous activity for the first 24 hours.
  • Wear sunglasses outdoors and protective shields when sleeping.
