What to Expect during Your Recovery from IntraLase® FS Laser Surgery

Smiling man lying on his back with his hands behind his headThe advanced IntraLase® FS laser has made LASIK surgery safer and more effective than ever before. The accuracy and precision that can be achieved with this less invasive approach to LASIK results in minimal inflammation and irritation following surgery. Another very important advantage of IntraLase® is that it requires a comparatively shorter recovery time than traditional LASIK eye surgery. Dr. Andrew Holzman can help you understand exactly what to expect during your recovery from IntraLase® surgery. Please contact our Washington, DC-area practice to schedule a consultation with Dr. Holzman.

Aftercare and Recovery

You will typically be instructed to rest with your eyes closed for the remainder of the day after your procedure. Most patients are able to return to work after 24 hours, and can resume normal activities within a day or two. When you resume your normal routine, you should still be careful to avoid exerting any pressure on the eyes.

Achieve Results More Quickly

Laser vision correction with the IntraLase® laser can help you experience improved vision even more quickly than traditional LASIK surgery. In fact, many patients find their vision is significantly improved immediately following treatment. Over the next month, the full extent of the results become apparent faster than they typically do following traditional LASIK.

Increased Comfort

Since the IntraLase® laser is extremely precise, it minimizes the impact on surrounding tissue. This results in less inflammation and irritation, and a generally more comfortable recovery. After recovery, IntraLase® patients have even reported a lower incidence of side effects like dry eyes. And although the risk of developing an infection of the corneal flap is already extremely low, laser incisions further reduce this risk.

Why Choose Surgery with IntraLase®?

IntraLase® is the most significant advancement to occur in the field of LASIK eye surgery in the last decade. In essence, it has made an already life-changing procedure safer, and made it possible to experience the full benefits sooner.

Like traditional LASIK, surgery with the IntraLase® laser is a process of correcting small corneal imperfections that result in nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. These corrections allow light to properly focus on the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Once the final results become apparent, patients find that they rely less on glasses or contacts, or do not need corrective eyewear at all.

Unlike traditional LASIK, which uses a fine keratome blade to create a hinged flap in the outer layer of the cornea, the IntraLase® system uses a precise, computer-controlled laser. The corneal flap grants access to the stroma, or center layer of the cornea. Dr. Holzman then uses the excimer laser to vaporize tiny amounts of tissue, refining the shape of the cornea to improve focus. FInally, the flap is replaced to facilitate healing.
