Dr. Andrew Holzman, board-certified corneal specialist, has always been on the cutting edge of technology with corneal refractive procedures like LASIK and PRK in Tysons Corner.  It’s not surprising that he is now proud to bring corneal cross-linking to the Northern Virginia – Maryland – DC region!  Could you be a potential corneal cross-linking patient?

Post-LASIK ectasia and keratoconus are visually disabling conditions.  Current traditional treatment options include glasses and contact lens.  When these options fail, medical professionals used to consider penetrating keratoplasty (PKP), a corneal transplant, as their only surgical option.  However, that is all about to change with the introduction of corneal cross-linking.  While this procedure is “new” to the US, it has been widely performed for many years in other parts of the world, like Europe and Canada.  It is because of this successful history that Dr. Holzman can now offer ectasia patients a safe alternative to PKP.

“Fortunately, there may be another option for these patients,” Dr. Holzman said.  “The use of UV-A irradiation combined with topical Riboflavin to increase collagen cross-linking (CXL) has shown great potential over this past decade in slowing or eliminating progression of keratoconus and post-LASIK ectasia.”

Andrew Holzman MD is pleased to be bringing this technology to the entire Northern Virginia – Maryland – DC region.  As part of the ACOS/Topcon Cross-Linking Study, we will be an official US Clinical Trial study cite.  The results of our important study will hopefully lead to successful approval of this procedure in the US.  “It is very exciting to be able to offer a procedure that potentially may prevent hundreds, if not thousands, of corneal transplants from being needed.”  Dr. Holzman said.

We plan on beginning the enrollment process over the next few weeks.  If you have been diagnosed with keratoconus or have been deemed a non-candidate for LASIK or PRK because you were a keratoconus suspect, please contact our office at 703-936-6935 or send my Clinical Director an email at jen (dot) weigel (at) vision.com so that you can be added to our growing list of potential candidates.  – jw
