Millions of Americans have blurry vision as the result of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

Laser vision correction procedures such as PRK can improve your vision and eliminate your need for glasses or contacts.

At Dr. Andrew Holzman’s offices in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, we make PRK affordable without sacrificing quality of care.

How much will PRK cost in your case?

Factors That Affect The Cost Of PRK

When determining the cost of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), we must take a variety of factors into consideration, including:

PRK patient in exam room

Regional Pricing

The cost of laser eye surgery is typically higher in a larger city or metro area such as Washington, DC, due to the higher cost of operating a business in urban versus rural regions.

PRK Patient Consult

Experience of Doctor

A surgeon with more education, training, and skill will typically charge more than a less experienced surgeon. It is never a good idea to compromise quality for price when it comes to laser eye surgery.

PRK Offers Long-Term Savings

One of the most important benefits of undergoing photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) at one of our offices in Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia is that patients almost always save money in the long run.

The Cost of Contacts & Glasses

Refractive surgery eliminates the cost of contact lenses, glasses, contact lens solution, repeat prescriptions, and additional vision products that can add up to hundreds of dollars per year. And if you could put a value on the convenience of vision care following PRK surgery, the savings would be even more profound.

The Cost of Health Complications

Corneal infections are common among even the most diligent contact users, often requiring multiple doctor visits, antibiotics, expensive professional-strength eye drops, and time off work. After refractive surgery, health complications as a result of contact lens use are no longer a concern.

PRK versus LASIK Surgery

PRK and LASIK surgery are similar because they both treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism by reshaping the cornea with a laser. At our Washington, DC, practice, we recommend PRK when patients have thin or damaged corneas. Learn more about how these procedures work.

During LASIK, incisions are made in the outer layer of the cornea, the epithelium, to create a flap. This provides access to the underlying stroma layer of the cornea, which is reshaped with an excimer laser so that light focuses directly on the retina. Once the cornea has been reshaped, the flap is closed and patients are sent home to recover.

During PRK, the epithelial layer is removed altogether. Once the epithelium is removed, the surgeon reshapes the cornea with the laser. Special contact lenses are then placed in the eyes to protect them and help them heal as the epithelial layer grows back. This technique results in similar results but a longer recovery period than LASIK.
