With the PRK procedure there is a short amount of time for the healing of the surface of the eye, called the epithelium. The epithelium layer is the protective layer of the front of the cornea.  The epithelium acts as a barrier to protect the cornea, resisting the free flow of fluids from the tears, and prevents bacteria from entering the corneal stroma.

Preoperatively, Dr. Holzman has our PRK patients use Vitamin C supplements and take Omega-3 supplements both pre and post operatively to aid in a faster and more comfortable healing process.  Dr. Holzman also recommends that his patients chill there drops in the refrigerator as they feel good cold initially for the first week post op.  We have you use artificial tears, an antibiotic drop and an anti-inflammatory drop pre-op to prepare you for your PRK procedure.

With the PRK procedure a small diameter of epithelial cells are removed to expose the cornea for reshaping to correct your vision.  Once Dr. Holzman has completed your cornea reshaping he places a clear contact lens over the area where epithelial cells will need to grow back.  This contact lens acts a the protective barrier and is removed only by a doctor after 3 to 5 days.   If you accidentally rub your eyes after PRK there is really no need to worry unless you knock the bandage contact lens. If the contact lens is moved or knocked out, you will know it! We simply have you come back to the center and we put another clear bandage contact lens on the eye so that your epithelial cells can grow back. So the good news, no need to worry unless you moved the contact lens!
