Can a FSA or HSA benefit from my employer help cover the cost of LASIK or PRK?

Many patients want to know if they have an FSA or an HSA benefit will it help cover the cost of an elective refractive surgery procedure.  The answer is yes.  If your employer offers a tax-free Flexible spending account (FSA) or Healthcare savings account (HSA) benefit you would be able to pay for your laser vision correction with pretax dollars. This could mean a savings of 20-30% of the cost for those who are eligible.

Employer flexible spending accounts are a popular way to help cover part of the costs for laser vision correction.  Participating employees set aside pretax dollars for LASIK surgery and other approved medical expenses. Depending on your income level, you may save up to $2,500 a year with your healthcare savings accounts.  Most flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts do not roll over the following year. You want to be sure to plan ahead and prepare so you will not lose your contributions to your FSA or HSA.

This is a perfect time of year to schedule your laser vision correction consultation for those who are eligible to put pretax dollars aside for medical expenses.  Most FSA and HSA plans are starting to allow open enrollment usually starting between October through January.  Dr. Holzman offers a complimentary consultation for LASIK or PRK so that you can determine ahead of tie if you are a good candidate for laser vision correction before you put pretax dollars aside to help cover the expense of the procedure.  This is a great benefit to help offset some of the costs of this life changing procedure.
