smiling-womanHere at our Virginia LASIK surgery centers, we pride ourselves on quality results and excellent patient care. That’s why we use the latest in LASIK technology and the most advanced surgical techniques out there. It’s true that traditional LASIK surgery is effective and has been for many years, but the use of Wavefront mapping has allowed us to customize each surgery with some incredible results.

How Traditional LASIK Surgery Works

Traditional LASIK surgery involves the reshaping of the cornea with a safe surgical laser. Once a flap is created on the outermost layer of the eye, a LASIK surgeon can very precisely make adjustments to the contour of the cornea. The flap is then set back in place and the patient experience clearer, crisper vision.

Traditional LASIK served patients well, that cannot be denied, but at our Virginia laser vision correction centers, we have made the next step forward in laser eye surgery. That involves the use of Wavefront technology.

About Wavefront Technology

Wavefront technology was originally created for use in physics and astronomy to reduce imperfections in the optical systems of laser devices and telescopes. In a LASIK practice, Wavefront technology is used to precisely map the shape of your corneas. This allows us to identify the many minute imperfections of the cornea, which are called “aberrations.”

Higher Order Aberrations and Lower Order Aberrations

Using this advanced laser vision correction technology allows us to identify both higher order and lower order aberrations. Lower order aberrations refer to nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism (common refractive errors). Higher order aberrations refer to other vision problems that may impact your ability to see, such as halos, glare, poor contrast sensitivity, double vision, and so on.

The Difference that Wavefront Technology Makes

In the past, traditional LASIK could only address lower order aberrations. Using Wavefront for laser eye surgery allowed surgeons to actually correct higher order aberrations as well as lower order aberrations. This is because the Wavefront map of the patient’s eyes are extremely detailed, and this information will be used to guide the LASIK laser during your surgery.

Results that You Can Really Appreciate

So what does this mean for patients? Well, since custom Wavefront LASIK corrects higher order aberrations and lower order aberrations, patients who undergo custom LASIK rather than traditional LASIK experience far clearer vision. Since the laser during the custom LASIK surgery is guided by computer, there is also less chance for even slight human error.

In addition to this, our laser eye surgery team uses all-laser custom LASIK to enhance the vision of patients. iLASIK, as it’s called, means the safest possible surgery with the most precise vision correction available today.
