Common LASIK Questions – 2025
Thinking about LASIK eye surgery? You’re not alone. It’s one of the most popular and trusted vision correction procedures available. At Holzman Laser Vision, we believe the best results start with informed patients — so we’ve compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions from people just like you across Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, and Maryland.
What is LASIK?
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a quick, outpatient procedure that reshapes the cornea using a laser to improve how light is focused on the retina. It can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
Am I a candidate for LASIK?
You may be a candidate if:
- You’re over 18
- Your vision prescription has been stable for at least a year
- You have healthy eyes with no significant issues like dry eye or corneal thinning
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
The only way to know for sure is through a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Holzman.
How long does the LASIK procedure take?
The entire visit usually lasts about 90 minutes, but the procedure itself only takes around 15 minutes for both eyes. Most of that time is spent preparing you and ensuring accurate laser calibration.
Is LASIK painful?
Not at all. Numbing drops are used before the procedure to keep you comfortable. Some patients feel slight pressure, but there is no sharp pain. Mild irritation afterward is common but temporary.
What is recovery like?
Most patients see improved vision within 24 hours. You’ll need to avoid rubbing your eyes and follow instructions for using prescription drops. Normal activities often resume in 1–2 days, with full healing taking a few weeks. Learn more about LASIK recovery
Are the results permanent?
Yes, for most patients. If your prescription was stable before surgery, your LASIK results should last many years. Some people may need reading glasses later in life due to natural aging (presbyopia).
Are there any risks?
All surgeries carry some risk, but LASIK is extremely safe when performed by an experienced surgeon like Dr. Holzman. We use advanced screening and modern technology to minimize complications.
What if I’m not a candidate for LASIK?
We offer other solutions such as PRK, ICL or Refractive Lens Exchange. These can be a safe and effective alternative to LASIK for certain patients. Dr. Holzman will recommend the best option for your vision needs.
How much does LASIK cost?
LASIK pricing can vary from one center to another based on the technology used, the surgeon’s expertise, and the level of care provided before and after the procedure. At HLV, we exclusively use advanced technology and offer transparent pricing with flexible financing options to make LASIK more accessible. We truly believe the quality of our care is second to none.
