How does custom wavefront LASIK differ from traditional LASIK?
- Visual errors are caused by imperfections in the shape of the cornea.
- By strategically removing tissues from the stromal layer of the cornea (the layer that lies directly underneath the top layer, the epithelium), these imperfections can be corrected, and the cornea can be returned to a more ideal shape.
- This more ideal shape will result in improved vision and a reduced need for glasses or contact lenses. In many cases, people no longer require glasses or contact lenses to see clearly at all.
The difference between custom wavefront LASIK and traditional LASIK lies in the type of visual errors that are corrected:
- Traditional LASIK: When traditional LASIK was conceived, it was possible to measure and correct only lower-order aberrations, or the most universal of the visual errors, namely myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. These are the same errors that glasses and contact lenses have traditionally been able to address.
- Custom wavefront LASIK: With the advent of wavefront technology, it became possible to detect higher-order aberrations – tiny, unique imperfections in the shape of each cornea – that could not previously be identified or measured, let alone corrected. Now, wavefront maps of each individual eye can be created prior to LASIK surgery and used to guide the excimer laser during the reshaping of the cornea.
