The KAMRA™ Inlay: Restore Your Reading Vision
The KAMRA™ inlay provided at Dr. Andrew Holzman's TLC Laser Eye Centers Rockville, MD, office can improve close focus for patients with presbyopia. Presbyopia, the age related decline in near and reading vision, affects more than 100 million Americans. Presbyopia usually becomes apparent when a patient is in their 40's, making it necessary to begin wearing reading glasses. The KAMRA™ inlay is a special lens implanted directly into the cornea to improve near vision in one eye, allowing the patient to retain distance vision while experiencing improved near vision. As a result, the patient's need for reading glasses is significantly reduced or eliminated. If you are suffering with presbyopia and wish to restore your reading vision, please contact our office today and schedule a consultation.
What is the KAMRA™ Inlay?
The KAMRA™ inlay is a special lens made of a biocompatible material called polyvinylidene fluoride. It is thinner than a contact lens, with a smaller diameter (3.8mm). A small opening of about 1.6mm in the center of the lens acts like the aperture of a camera. It only allows focused light to reach the retina, increasing depth of focus. With the KAMRA™ inlay, daily activities can become much easier without the hassle of looking for a pair of reading glasses.
Is the KAMRA™ Inlay Right for Me?
If you are between the ages of 45 and 60, do not require glasses or contact lenses for distance vision, and require glasses between the powers of +1 to +2.5 for reading, you may be an excellent candidate for the KAMRA™ inlay. If you are over 40, you may also be a candidate for monovision LASIK, a procedure that provides a different degree of correction in either eye for improved vision at every distance. There are certain advantages to the KAMRA™ inlay in comparison to monovision LASIK. These advantages are:
- Minimal disturbance (if at all) to distance vision
- No loss of depth perception
- It continues to work for you as you age while the condition presbyopia worsens
- In the rare circumstance that it simply does not work for you, it is removable and reversible.
During an in-depth consultation, we can determine which solution is best for your needs. Not everyone will be a candidate for the procedure as thorough candidacy testing is necessary.
Placing the KAMRA™ Inlay
Surgical placement of the KAMRA™ inlay is an outpatient procedure that takes approximately 20 minutes. Numbing eye drops are administered to ensure patient comfort. Next, a laser is used to create an incision in the cornea. The inlay is carefully placed within the corneal tissue, allowing the eye to focus through the aperture. The ultra-precise incision requires no sutures following surgery.
Many KAMRA™ inlay patients experience improved reading vision within one to two weeks. However, this can take longer depending on individual healing patterns. Patients can usually return to work and other normal daily activities within 24 hours. You will be provided with medication to foster healing, and we will prescribe special exercises to help you become used to your inlay. Your progress will be gauged during follow-up exams.
The KAMRA™ inlay can help you experience greater freedom from corrective eyewear, along with other unique benefits that make it a choice worth considering if you have been diagnosed with presbyopia. To find out if the KAMRA™ inlay or another advanced refractive solution is right for you, schedule a consultation at our office in Rockville TLC Laser Eye Centers today.
